From Bizet's Carmen to Ravel, French composers in particular were captivated by this slow, sensual dance from Cuba's capital, Havana. The effect is quite comparable to the current success of Cuban music. Ravel's Pièce en forme de Habanéra, written for violin and piano in 1926 and distributed in countless arrangements, is a classic of the genre, inspired as much by the Spanish motherland as by the colony of Cuba. Ravel, as is well known, came from the Pyrenees: he was born in the village of Cibelou, not far from the Spanish border – in March 1875, incidentally, just four days after Georges Bizet's opera Carmen had its premiere in Paris. The relationship to Carmen's Habanéra in his own Habanera is by no means accidental. RAVEL , MAURICE , born in 1875 in the Pyrenees, died in 1937 in Paris, French composer. As a representative of so-called Impressionism, he was a comrade-in-arms of Debussy and without doubt the most performed French composer of this century (also at Villa Musica). He studied in Paris with Fauré and others, but for years he applied in vain for the Prix de Rome, which Gounod, for example, had received. He is important for our topic because of his predilection for Spain, which can be found in all genres from his earliest works onwards. Famous examples are: “Pavane pour une infante défunte” for piano, the cycle “Don Quichotte à Dulcinée” for voice, “Rhapsodie espagnole” for orchestra, “Alborada del gracioso” and “Boléro”. Maurice Ravel's "Pièce en forme de Habanéra" (1907) is also a piece "in the form of," that is, modeled on a popular style of music. In this case, it is Cuba's most famous dance, named the "Habanera" after the capital, Havana. Ever since Georges Bizet used it in his "Carmen," a veritable Habanera craze had broken out in France, followed by Chabrier, Debussy, and Ravel, among others. The latter's Habanera was not originally a "pièce" but a "vocalise," a textless exercise piece for voice and piano.
